Charter schools came into existence because public schools, especially in urban arias was faltering. However, they did not just pop into existence overnight. About forty years ago reports and books were starting to flood the American scene about K-12 education that slipped into critical states of affairs. One such report that mirrored the crisis was, " A Nation At Risk " and another outstanding book was " Crisis in the Classroom " by Charles E. Silberman. Some progress was made, but for the most part, urban centers continued to wane. Parents who had the means, exuded the cities for the suburbs or moved children into private schools. But many of the parents left behind along with many Ohio citizens pushed for educational reforms of all kinds with legislators in Columbus. And as a result, two reform movements, the voucher system ( please click here for more info ) and charters opened the doors for parents in need of better choices for children. The charter schools are being monitored today by many groups and that is as it should be. And perhaps good schools, public, private or charters need it the most, simply as a cautious measure to keep them on top. It is much to easy to slept out of top spots by becoming engulfed in vanity. But beware of charter media exposure that centers attention on reports that discredit the schools. There are special interest groups, some with ties to public education, out to damage the image of charters. I wrote an article related to the damning of local Hope Academies that actually brought damnation to the instigators...from angry parents of children attending the schools. Ever realize, that with all the energy spelt to discredit the charters, if put into positive force at improving public education years before, charters would not be catching the attention of parents today.
Read or listen to the critical reports on the charters with an open mind, and then turn to a source that cuts out the biases, and read about the good and bad in Report Cards, that are offered by Ohio Department of Education ( ODE ). Another good source that includes the ODE reports is the greatschools Web site. After each of the charter schools below, the reader can click into some current information provided by greatschools. I highly recommend their Newsletter which is free and full of insightful information for parents concerned about providing children with the best in educational services.
And whenever the schools below gain special attention from ODE or other groups, I will make note of the information. Parents are welcome to write reviews (good, not so good, or bad) of schools their children attend or did in the past but negative criticism prompted change. And please feel free to offer ideas that could improve on this Web page.
